چکیده

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the production of quorum sensing (QS) molecules by aerobic granules in membrane-partitioned bioreactor. Flow-chamber (FC) tests with Escherichia coli K12 demonstrated that granules induced more attached growth of E. coli cells than activated sludge flocs, leading to more cell adhesion and biofilm formation on the FC cover slide. Using the thin-layer chromatography, N-acy-l-homoserine lactones (AHLs) with acyl chains shorter than 10 carbons were detected in the liquid phase of granular sludge. Organic substances extracted with acidified ethyl acetate from the supernatant of granular sludge promoted the adhesion and growth of E. coli cells on the glass surface. AHL-like signal molecules were apparently produced by granules and might be involved in the formation of granules and the maintenance of granular structures during wastewater treatment.

Biochemical Detection of N-Acyl Homoserine Lactone from Biofilm-Forming Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Isolated from Urinary Tract Infection Samples

Background: N-Acyl homoserine lactone (AHL) is found to be the main component of quorum sensing (QS) in Gram-negative bacteria and plays an important role in biofilm formation. Little information is available regarding the role of AHL in biofilm formation in Escherichia coli (E. coli). The purpose of this investigation was to biochemically detect and characterize AHL activity in biofilm-forming...

Induction of plasmid-carried qnrS1 in Escherichia coli by naturally occurring quinolones and quorum-sensing signal molecules.

Naturally occurring quinolone and quinolone-like compounds, such as quinine, 2-hydroxyquinoline, 4-hydroxyquinoline, and 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy-4(1H)-quinolone, increased expression of qnrS1 in Escherichia coli 2.3- to 11.2-fold, similar to the synthetic quinolone ciprofloxacin. In contrast, chromosomal qnrVS1 of Vibrio splendidus was not induced by these compounds. Molecules associated with quorum...

Detection of Diverse N-Acyl-Homoserine Lactones in Vibrio alginolyticus and Regulation of Biofilm Formation by N-(3-Oxodecanoyl) Homoserine Lactone In vitro

Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication system based on the exchange of small intercellular signal molecules, such as N-Acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), which act as cell-density mediators of QS gene expression, and are highly variable both in types and amounts in most Gram-negative Proteobacteria. Understanding the regulation of AHLs may contribute to the elucidation of cell densit...

Reaction of acylated homoserine lactone bacterial signaling molecules with oxidized halogen antimicrobials.

Oxidized halogen antimicrobials, such as hypochlorous and hypobromous acids, have been used extensively for microbial control in industrial systems. Recent discoveries have shown that acylated homoserine lactone cell-to-cell signaling molecules are important for biofilm formation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, suggesting that biofouling can be controlled by interfering with bacterial cell-to-cell c...
